Top Left Pic: Conceptually indicates how the Lobby, Exhibit hall and Dining spaces could be multi-level and interactive.
Next Pic Down: Shows a small wellness center overlooking a outdoor space (outdoor recreation)
Next Pic Down: A large whirlpool could provide relaxation, but still provide an area where students could continue the design discussions and other studies.
2nd Row Top: "The Cave" is an interactive virtual space used for modeling. This space is shown in my bubble diagram adjacent to the lobby as it could be another "show piece" marketing the school to the public.
Next Pic Down: Conceptually indicates a space for the Outdoor Recreation space, small open space for Frisbee, along with some beautiful landscaping to be seen from inside the Distance Learning Center.
Bottom Right Pic: This picture also conceptually indicates how the Lobby, Exhibit hall and Dining spaces could be multi-level and interactive, but this is near the wellness center. The space is a multilevel open space with a rock climbing wall for use as part of the wellness program. Our firm works on a lot of university campuses creating recreation facilities for students; it has become one of the most requested amenities by students. Time is short during the intensive, but it is still important to continue "The Making of a Corporate Athlete" (from our 2nd Assignment in the Leadership class) by exercising. Spiritual Capacity is also part of this reading.... hence the Chapel/Meditation space.

Dave,
You know I think you rock man! ….. and now after seeing you with your cool baseball cap and the “I am to hoot of a guy in my super dupper boat” pose…. Well you just are one degree above “cool”!!!!
I always enjoy your clean practical thinking and once again I see it in the work you are showing here. Two things they pop in my mind after reading your work:
- I was not to convinced about the “security” but after really thinking about it, it might be a good idea… do you think if we have “electronic entry to the building” do we need to have 24 hrs security?
- I though that the parking might be just for a few cars (like you), and now I got caught in the technicality of “code”, and who better than you to answer this: what dose the code say (not that we are looking code now, but…. just for personal interest)
Do we need to have so many parking spots? Is just enough to “justify” that not too many students arrive in car, so we can get a variance?.... it might that code only requires one for every 24 students =) ….
O by the way …… if your building has a hot tub on it and all the amenities showing there…… I want to “birth” myself there and stay there!
Gus,
Your great! You make great points, yet make me laugh.
I looked over the parking zoning requirements (quickly) and until we got a site, it was hard to decide what was needed. Now that we have a site, our group study of the zoning, lot size, ect... will help us decide the parking requirements. Great points!
24 Hr security was a question for me. I have noted card type access at the front door, but I thought the security could be a reception type desk (not necessary an armed gaurd) for times the public was allowed in the building. No with that said, we could still have secured points going to the dorm area and the classroom area that wouldn't allow public to those areas. After we have another meeting or two with the client, we should have a better handle on what there desires are and that space could possibly be removed.
Speaking of "birthing", hope you and the family had a great holiday season!
David, thanks for re-posting. Indeed it is quite complete. A few questions though: does your ideal learning environment include a dedicated computer lab? is a class of up to 14 reasonable? should there be smaller groupings / smaller spaces? who would be using the cave? Any space overlaps? lounge / recreation / dining / exhibit?
I like your hot tub (prime target for value engineering...), but I could live without the omni presence of excersise equipment (lounge?)
Dave
Our group is starting this exercise and it was extremely beneficial to see what your group has completed to date. The program looks very complete except for mechanical/electrical spaces. Is this included in your net to gross numbers? It will be interesting to see what impact we can make in these spaces with green strategies.
Nice Job!
David,
You are very thorough in your program. I know yuor reasoning behind the chapel/meidtation and the wellness center. I think they are great ideas, I only wonder if they would actually be utilized. I myself stated I need to follow the Corporate Athlete article and I haven't even been able to implement it in my home life. I wonder if people would find the ability to implement it the intensive week. I think it is something that might need some investigating. Maybe they are included but aren't as large. Maybe check the surrounding areas for churchs (which we will have by the end of the week with all of our information studies). Good job. Keep it up!
Werner,
Here are a few thoughts, not necessarily answers, for your questions...
1. I have a dedicated computer lab, but I didn't make it big enough for everyone as I felt the with today's world, everyone has there own laptop (or something smaller 5 years from now) and they use it at their design studio desk.
2. 14 isn't enough if we use what the BAC allows into the program, however the client asked for 14. I think it is worth further discussion to challenge the owner.
3. I have created some breakout rooms near each classroom. I think it is important to be able to go off in smaller groups, or atleast have areas to sneak away.
4. I think overlaping the lobby, exhibit hall and dining is good and that is my initial thought, but I didn't reduce them with that in mind, as they could have multiple functions or classes going on at the same time and I feel it is important not to short anyone. Once again, further discussion with the client would be good.
5. Several of you have questioned the wellness center and I agree that it may not get used enough to have, but in today's world of fitness, thought it was something the client should think about.
Thanks everyone for the challenging questions/thoughts
